September 14th, 2023

At 01.00 a.m. we prepared boarding time for the flight. Next, we arrived at Ninoy Aquino International Airport at 05.50 Philippine time. We were invited by Ma'am Ailyn as International Relations Coordinator from the University of Santo Tomas. She is very friendly and beautiful. Along the way to the hostel we were explained about today's activity schedule. We were also explained about the names of roads around campus, the location of partner schools for future teaching, halal food places, hospitals and several schedules of upcoming activities.

Dormitory Domus Mariae International Residence

Then we arrived at the Dormitory International Residences Domus Mariae. The dormitory is located on campus near the swimming pool. In the dormitory there are not just the three of us. There are also students from Indonesia and Thailand who take part in the SEA Teacher program. We were also invited by one of them to have lunch at Sohaila, a place that sells halal food. It is located close to campus so it doesn't take long to get there. This place sells Malay food from Malaysia which tastes almost similar to Indonesian food and this is the first time I have tasted Malay food.

The Campus Tour starts from the main building at the University of Santo Tomas. My friends and I were invited to visit the exhibition on the main campus. In the museum, there are items originating from Indonesia, one of which is a wayang mask. We were taken on a tour of the campus and told about the buildings on campus. Starting from the names of campus buildings from each department to the philosophy of the gate at the front of the campus. The buildings on campus are very unique and good for photo spots.

This is my second day in Manila. On this day, we have a lot of activities scheduled, including a meeting with the Dean, a Meeting with Partners School, and a Cultural Tour. The first agenda on the second day began with the meeting of the Dean and Assistant Dean of the College of Education. We were accompanied by Ma'am Ailyn, she and chatted about our journey on arrival in Manila. After that, our second agenda was to visit partner schools at the Dominican School of Manila (DSM) together with Ma'am Ailyn and Ma'am Carmina as Chair of the Elementary Education Department. This is our first time coming to the partner school, the place where we will teach. At DSM, we met with the principal and several teaching staff. At DSM, each of us gets one Cooperating Teacher. I got a class to teach at Grade level 1 with a Cooperating Teacher named Ms. Jo-Anne. During 2 weeks at DSM, I will carry out observation, assistantship, pre-teaching, and demo teaching.

On the second day, my friends and I were invited to explore Manila. We went to many places in Manila, including Intramuros, Catedral, Chicken Inasal Bacolod for Lunch, Malacanan Museum Tour, The Presidential Museum, National Museum of Anthropology, Rizal Park, Jolibee. During the trip to these places. We were taught a little Filipino (Tagalog) and things related to the Philippines that were very interesting to know. Rizal Park

Intramuros is a historical building in Manila that holds many stories about the history of the Philippines. Before touring inside, we watched a documentary video about the history of the Philippines before independence. After that, we went around to see the buildings in Intramuros. The building is very unique and still looks sturdy, which is an attraction for taking photos there. Because the weather was hot, after walking around we bought Milk Tea. After that, we continued our journey to visit the Catedral which is still located in the Intramuros area. After that, we headed to Chicken Inasal Bacolod for lunch. This is my first time eating Filipino food. I ordered Chicken Sig-sig food. It tastes delicious and there are lots of portions, it feels very satisfying to eat. After eating, we continued to visit the Malacanan Museum and The Presidential Museum. In these places, we learned historical stories about the presidential era in the Philippines. Apart from that, we also visited the Anthropology Museum and Rizal Park. Rizal Park is the final destination in the Cultural Tour. At Rizal Park, we took photos and saw the attractive beauty of the city park. We also didn't forget to try street food in Manila, namely Kwek-Kwek, a type of fried food made from eggs. The color is orange, very unique, isn't it? made me curious about the taste and it tastes delicious, especially when eaten when it's still hot, it's very delicious. We ate it while watching the fountain accompanied by music, adding to the beauty of the afternoon. After that, we stopped at Jollibee to buy dinner and headed back to the Dormitory. Even though it is tiring, it is fun because we visit lots of historical places in Manila, Philippines. Today was a great day and lots of stories to share.
